Several establishments acquire representations of broadly dispersed objects which will or may not be found in museums. One of the pioneers in this area was ArtServe, a set of thousands of pictures, notably of classical art and architecture, made out there by the Australian National University for academics Museum of Art and college students of art history. Virtual museums in this sense provide the coed many benefits—not least in the selection of material for detailed study—even though final recourse could additionally be essential to the original material.
